Leonie in Austria

The name Leonie was covered last week at Appellation Mountain and I was surprised, how it was described. It was depicted as an uncommon French classic, but I never really thought about it in that way. In Austria it is at the moment one of the most common female names for newborns.

Popularity

Leonie, which derives from the Latin word for lion ( lat. leo, leonis) is connected to the generation, which was born in the beginning of the 21 century in Austria and Germany. You can find a girl named so in every elementary school and playground. Since 1984 7587 girls received this name, here not included are spelling modifications like Leoni and Léonie and also not included are hyphenated names. In 2003 this first name was in the Top Ten of the most common names for the first time in Austria. Several years before, its popularity started. In 2000 it was on the 55th position, one year later it raised 21 places and the following year it was already on the 14th position. To demonstrate its popularity in recent years I have created the following chart.

Hyphenated Names

My last example with the name Anna showed that Austrian parents like to give hyphenated names to their children, especially to their daughters. I have often found names hyphenated with Leonie in the Austrian name statistics. Many parents tend to combine the popular and trendy Leonie to something more uncommon like Clio and Mercedes. But others just stick to the already over-popular name the most popular second names Sophie and Marie. Since 1984 49 girls received the name Leonie-Sophie and further 21, Leonie-Marie. The majority of these following names are only given to one person.
